Estonia to Renovate Ikla Border Crossing in 2026
Estonia's Transport Administration is set to repair a 750-meter section of the Ikla border crossing, its largest southern gateway, in the spring of 2026. While the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) anticipates no disruption to their operations, they noted that temporary checks could be implemented if necessary.
Hannes Vaidla, head of the Transport Administration's Western Department, emphasized the necessity of the project. "This is our country's southern gate. With a daily traffic intensity of approximately 5,000 vehicles, half of which is heavy traffic, resurfacing is essential. We will reconstruct it in its current form, ensuring no changes for drivers," Vaidla stated.
He acknowledged the unique challenges of roadwork in a border area, highlighting the need to maintain uninterrupted electrical supply and communication connections for the PPA.
Argo Tali of the PPA's Western Prefecture mentioned that they have proposed the installation of additional electronic information boards. "The Covid crisis and the influx of Ukrainian refugees two years ago underscored how such boards would significantly expedite information sharing," Tali explained. Vaidla confirmed that preparations for these installations would be made.
Tali assured that the resurfacing itself would not impede the PPA's work, though he raised the possibility of temporary border controls being introduced. He does not foresee a significant need to alter the border crossing's existing infrastructure for routine operations.
"In the event of major crises requiring the prolonged reinstatement of temporary border controls, we would naturally be interested in modernizing the Ikla border post buildings, improving lighting, and enhancing traffic signage. However, these considerations will not hinder our ability to perform our duties, as temporary solutions can always be implemented," Tali clarified.
The local municipality of Häädemeeeste has also expressed hope that the project will consider improvements to waste management and the placement of advertising boards in the border area.
The renovation work is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2026 and is estimated to cost around €250,000.
