Republic Day concert: what kind of celebration will it be?

Actor Ott Sepp aptly pointed out six years ago in an advertising campaign the intricate expectations surrounding the Republic Day concert. According to him, it must be both profound and complex, yet also simple and accessible. Furthermore, it shouldn't be somber and gloomy, lest it be labeled as having "a complete funeral atmosphere," nor too light and humorous, to avoid accusations of making fun of Estonia's birthday.

"You have to do something new, surprise people, but at the same time not change anything, because changes make people nervous. And most importantly – everyone has to like it," Ott Sepp knew. However, he considered the right location the primary condition for a successful evening – the reception and concert performance must take place at the Estonia Concert Hall.

Having reviewed productions for nine years, Ott Sepp seems to be right – such a difficult task indeed lies with the artistic directors of this festive evening. This year, at least one condition is met: the 107th anniversary concert will be held at the Estonia Concert Hall. The director of the concert is Elmo Nüganen, the conductor is Tõnu Kaljuste, and the artist is Kristjan Suits. Who will perform and what they will present remains a secret until the evening of the celebration.

"Hopefully, the audience will have an experience that touches both the soul and the mind," says Tõnu Kaljuste. "It is always a great responsibility and honor to shape such an event. We cannot ignore world events, but at the same time, we are still celebrating our country's birthday. A balance must be found between these."

Thus, we stand in anticipation once again, wondering if Elmo Nüganen, Tõnu Kaljuste, and Kristjan Suits will be able to create a concert that meets the high expectations humorously but accurately articulated by Ott Sepp – being simultaneously profound, simple, and pleasing to all, while considering both traditions and current events.
